Tree Seedling Protection Nets and Protector Tubes - Tree Shelters - Tree Mats
Rigid Seeding Protection Nets & Protector Tubes
Many acres of newly planted tree seedlings have been destroyed due to animal damage. Seedling mortality can be halted by using protective barriers. Seedling protectors have years of successful long term protection from deer, elk, mountain beaver, rabbits, gophers, and other rodents. Seedling protectors were originally developed for Douglas Fir seedlings in the Pacific Northwest to physically prevent animals from reaching the growing plant. These efficient protectors have grown in popularity with foresters, businessmen and weekend planters. |
 |
Rigid Seedling Protector Tubes are an inexpensive and effective method which greatly reduces clipping and browsing on dormant and growing tree seedlings. Rigid seedling protectors are made out of photo degradable material which deteriorates in about two years. Rigid seedling protectors are designed so that seedling height growth and form are not impaired, and are non hazardous to the forest ecosystem, domestic animals, or man.
Biodegradable materials can be added to ensure the tubes will degrade without exposure to ultraviolet light. Please call for price quote.

Plantra® Treeshelters
All Tree tubes from Plantra are designed to protect and grow small deciduous or hardwood seedling trees and direct-seeded acorns and nuts. The key point is that Plantra Tree Tubes need to be taller than the seedlings they are intended to protect and grow and are not intended for use as a "bark wrap" around sapling trees.
Ships compactly in coiled nest. Quickly forms treeshelter with side opening.
- All treeshelters are the same diameter for consistent growth
- Allows access to seedlings for weeding and pruning
- Easily removed and re-used

Plantra ® Tree Bark Protector
Shield your deciduous sapling trees from "buck rub" and other mechanical damage (e.g. lawn mower damage) with Tree Bark Protectors.
Plantra Tree Bark Protectors are white, opaque twin-walled (corrugated) tubes that are slit lengthwise and gently coil around the trunk of deciduous sapling trees 1 to 2 inches in diameter, providing protection from:
- Buck rub/antler damage
- Rodent damage and girdling
- String trimmers and "weed whackers"
- Lawn mowers ("mower blight")
Easy to use. Simply open the side of the Tree Bark Protector and wrap around the trunk. For 2 inch and larger trunks use the locking tabs to keep the tube open and create air space around the trunk.
Opaque and reflective. Unlike our treeshelter tubes which are designed to optimize photosynthesis and growth, Plantra Tree Bark Protectors block and reflect sunlight to minimize temperature fluctuations in the bark. |

VisPore Tree Mat
The VisPore Tree Mat is a proven weed barrier, keeping down weeds in a 9 sq. ft. area surrounding the tree seedling for three years. It allows the passage of rain through the mat, while restricting water and nutrient hogging weeds. Used in combination with TubexTM, VisPore Tree Mats give the seedling the best growing conditions that can be had.
Stop the weeds that steal growth from your trees! |

The Importance of Weed Control
Weeds and grasses grow faster than planted seedlings – taking nutrients from the soil around your seedlings and blocking the sunlight they need in order to grow.
In order for your seedlings to survive and grow, you must aggressively control weeds and grasses until your seedlings are safely established.
Several types of weed control can be effective:
1 – Herbicide spraying (provided you protect your seedlings from contact herbicides with Jump Start™ Treeshelters)
2 – Mechanical cultivation
3 – Mulching with organic material such as wood chips
4 – Weed mats – both organic and synthetic
Caution: Mowing is not weed control! Mowing allows your seedlings to get more sunlight, and can reduce rodent habitat, but mowing does NOT prevent weed roots from absorbing the nutrients your seedlings need (in fact, mowing invigorates grass so it steals more nutrients!).
All forms of weed control have pro’s and con’s. It’s a matter of optimizing the pro’s, minimizing the con’s, and choosing the right weed control method for your needs. NO MATTER WHICH METHOD OF WEED CONTROL YOU CHOOSE, THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO DO IT, AND DO IT WELL!
